What Is Spiritual Direction?

Is something standing in the way of you being the best person you know you can be? Or blocking you from living the beautiful life you deeply desire for yourself?

The key to having a permanent breakthrough is to dig deep enough to get to the root cause of why you keep finding yourself in the same kind of unpleasant situations over and over again. By addressing the root of the problem, you free yourself to create the kind of life, love, and livelihood you truly want.
Spiritual direction will take you that deep, yet it does so in a gentle and loving way.
As a spiritual director, my job is not to tell you what to do. Rather, it is to listen for the spark of Divinity within you, highlight it, and bring it to the fore so you can learn to let it guide you. This supports you in becoming ever more skillful in listening for your own best wisdom, plus knowing how to take empowered action informed by it.
Meaning is an essential part of this equation. One of the things that makes life rich and worth living is the meaning you make out of things, the situations you are in, and the people with whom you engage.
Yet sometimes the meaning you have learned to make perpetuates the unpleasant things you do not want and locks you into a cycle of suffering. So it becomes essential to identify the meaning you have been making, assess if it is true and accurate, and if not, learn how to create new, life-affirming meaning. Helping you do this is another part of my responsibility to you as a spiritual director.

The term “spiritual direction” can be misleading. I am not directing you. YOU are directing you. I am simply supporting you to find the direction that is yours. This work is deep, profound, and sacred – as are you and as is your life. You deserve nothing less.

Although my personal theology is based on connection to a higher power, it is not necessary for you to believe in God to tap into your wisdom and meaning. You simply have to be willing to be open to new experiences and trust that you will know when you encounter the “right” meaning for you. I will be there to help you.

Ultimately, spiritual direction supports you in reaching for a life of authenticity and integrity. Authenticity means that you are fully yourself as you engage with the world. Integrity means that your words and actions match your beliefs.
The more you can live with authenticity and integrity, the less worry you will feel and the more joy. You will notice that you are less judgmental (of yourself and of others) and more kind, open-hearted, and curious.
Trust will replace doubt. You will feel more sure of your decisions and better able to ride the waves of change, knowing deep down that things will turn out okay. Along the way you will discover how to be deeply supportive to those around you, while still having plenty of love and attention for yourself.
